What should your portfolio be?

What is a portfolio

Your model portfolio or 'book' as it is sometimes called, is a collection of pictures of you that make you look like a model. They should look like working shots and should be executed in a very professional manner. The best portfolios are often a series of 'tear-sheets' from work that the model has done. Avoid any shots in which the pose looks rediculous because it probably is, which won't do you any favours. Don't forget that you only get one chance to give that first impression and that your portfolio is only as good as the worst shot in it.

The prints should be 12" x 8" or A4 in size, or if you are sending your images on CD send high resolution files and they may be a mixture of colour and b&w, with lots of different clothing, backgrounds and poses. The worst portfolio in the world looks like it's all been taken on the same day.

In our opinion, if you have less than about 15 shots you run the risk of people viewing you as being amateur because it may appear that you couldn't afford to pay for the prints. If you have more than about 25 shots you might find that people close your book before they get to the end and you definitely don't want that.

It may sound an obvious comment but make sure that the images are sharp and in focus, we see many portfolios which contain pictures that fall down on this point alone.

We can produce your portfolio for you if you wish. Our photographer is highly respected within the photographic and modelling industry and is used to working with some of the leading art directors and models on a regular basis. This means that the images produced are what art directors are used to looking at. Indeed, all the images on this web site are the work of our photographer. We do not display any work which has been produced any where else on these pages.
