Some simple tips to staying safe and not getting ripped off

OUR ADVICE TO MODELS

Where do you go from here?

You have found yourself at the door of a very genuine agency with a good reputation and you may never need another agency. Our advice, however, is to get your face out there as much as possible. Locate as many agencies as you can find, make contact with them and try to get yourself onto their books as well. Please remember, genuine agencies either do not charge joining fees or may only charge a modest fee to cover time spent on administration.

When presenting your-self to a new agency there are some golden rules:  Remember, you only get one chance to create that first impression.  Go with a professional and friendly attitude.  Attend in smart clothing but do not dress over the top.  If you present them with your portfolio make sure that it is up-to-date, has a great variety of looks (both dressed up and dressed down) and in particular, shots that can make you look like a model (not just portraits).  Pay great attention to what is being said to you, remember, they have probably been in this business for a long time.

  • Don't pay exorbitant fees to join an agency. Genuine agencies, like Acclaimed Model Management, do not charge any fees to represent a model for a period of time and only charge a very modest fee of £29.95 to cover administration costs.
  • Make sure that the agency handles the type of work which you would be interested in doing.
  • Get a good portfolio together, making certain that all the images are good professional shots of you. A good portfolio, whilst essential, does not have to cost you the earth. Expect to be paying no more than £400.
  • Unless you are intending to do glamour work do not include shots which contain nudity. Remember, even lingerie or swimware can have a 'glamour' look if taken wrongly or if you look too young.
  • Don't stop at just joining one agency. Apply to every agency that you can find. This way, you will find yourself getting more work.
  • Always let someone know where you are going and have a pre-determined phrase or someone's name which, if said in a telephone call, would let them know that, if for any reason you are concerned .
  • If you are told that the agency requires you to have a portfolio created they should always allow you to have that work done anywhere you want and not insist that you have that work done by them or by any one photographer that they recommend.
  • Always take someone with you when you visit an agency for the first time. Here at Acclaimed Model Management we will not allow anybody under 16 years old to meet us unless they are accompanied by a parent or grandparent.
  • At all times dress smartly, act in a professional manner and be confident about yourself.
